The Baptism of Clovis and Vercingetorix Surrendering to Caesar. What seems to simply be two paintings depicting historical scenes, in fact reveals a deep fracture in the political landscape of 19th century France. In a time where nationalism is on the rise in Europe, each country seeks symbolic figures from their past. But torn between royalty and the republic, between Catholicism and secularism, which historical leader will France choose? Which ancestors will be promoted in its history books? In this battle for an identity, Art becomes a powerful tool: through its analysis we will dive into French history, ancient and modern. Followed by a reception!
